All eastbound main lanes will be closed between the I-20 interchange and West Loop 820 in Tarrant County.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Nearly six miles of eastbound I-30 will completely shut down in western Tarrant County this weekend as crews prepare for a major traffic shift onto newly constructed pavement.

The closure begins at 7 p.m. Friday, August 14, and will remain in place through 6 a.m. the following Monday, August 17. All eastbound main lanes will be closed between the I-20 interchange and West Loop 820. Entrance and exit ramps along the closed stretch will also be shut down during the traffic switch.

TxDOT says the closure is needed to move eastbound traffic onto new permanent pavement as part of its ongoing Keep 20-30 Moving project.

The work covers roughly 5.7 miles of I-30 between I-20 and West Loop 820. It is part of a much larger reconstruction effort aimed at improving traffic flow, safety, and connections among western Tarrant County, eastern Parker County, and the rest of the Dallas-Fort Worth area. 

Drivers should expect significant delays throughout the weekend. TxDOT’s official detour will send eastbound I-30 traffic onto eastbound I-20 and then northbound I-820. The agency is recommending drivers use alternate routes when possible. 

The weekend closure comes during an already busy week of construction along the corridor. From August 10 through August 15, both directions of I-30 are also being reduced to one lane between West Loop 820 and Linkcrest Drive during daytime hours, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., for bridge work, truck access and drainage operations. 

The traffic switch will also bring several ramp changes beginning August 14. The eastbound I-30 exit to Walsh Ranch Parkway is scheduled to reopen. At the same time, the eastbound exit to Spur 580 will close for reconstruction and is expected to remain closed until winter 2027. The eastbound exit to Alemeda Street will also close, with that ramp expected to return to service in spring 2027. The eastbound I-30 entrance from Spur 580 will close for reconstruction as well. 

The work is part of three interconnected projects along I-20 and I-30 that began construction in August 2023 and carry a combined construction cost of approximately $420 million. 

One of the major goals along I-30 is relieving the bottleneck between Spur 580 and West Loop 820. TxDOT plans to widen that portion of I-30 from two general-purpose lanes to three in each direction. The project also includes improvements to the Spur 580 interchange and construction of continuous two-lane, one-way frontage roads. 

The broader work also includes improvements along I-20 around the I-20/I-30 split, new and reconstructed ramps, frontage road work and changes designed to improve connections between communities including Aledo, Willow Park, Hudson Oaks and Weatherford and the rest of the Metroplex. 

And eastbound drivers aren’t the only ones who will see a full weekend shutdown.

The following weekend, all westbound I-30 main lanes between West Loop 820 and I-20 are scheduled to close from 7 p.m. Friday, August 21, through 6 a.m. Monday, August 24. That closure will allow crews to complete a similar traffic switch onto new permanent pavement in the westbound direction. All westbound entrance and exit ramps along the stretch will also close, with the official detour sending drivers south on I-820 and then west on I-20. 

The work is expected to continue for several more years. TxDOT currently anticipates substantial completion of the portion of the project between Linkcrest Drive and West Loop 820 in 2030. 

As with most major construction projects, the weekend closure remains subject to change because of weather or scheduling.
