Richardson ISD students returned to campuses Aug. 12 for the 2026-27 school year.
The gist
RISD consists of four high schools, eight junior high and middle schools, 37 elementary schools and one alternative school.
RISD ended block scheduling at its secondary schools and moved back to a traditional bell schedule this school year as part of district-wide budget cuts. Middle schools and junior high students now attend eight 45-minute periods every day, while high school students attend seven 50-minute periods daily.
The district also began construction this summer at its six junior high schools to complete its initiative to turn all junior highs into middle schools serving sixth through eighth grades.
