A driver and a child died and two other children were injured in a car crash in Grand Prairie on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
At about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, a Chevrolet Suburban traveling southbound on Northeast 5th Street hit a parked garbage truck in the rear, according to a news release from Grand Prairie police. The driver of the Suburban was pronounced dead at the scene.
The three other occupants, all children, were taken to area hospitals for treatment, police said. An 11-year-old girl later died of her injuries, the second child was listed in critical but stable condition, and the third child suffered minor injuries.
Surveillance video from nearby businesses shows the Suburban traveling at a high speed before the crash, police said. Investigators also determined the occupants of the SUV were not wearing seatbelts.
The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the girl who died as Sofia Elisa Castro and the driver as 28-year-old Tomas Castro Martinez.
The crash remains under investigation.
