SAN ANTONIO – A routine response to a traffic accident turned dangerous on IH-10 when a Bexar County Precinct 4 constable’s patrol vehicle caught fire, forcing a deputy to escape moments before the unit was engulfed in flames.
The incident happened “today on IH-10 between Foster Road and Ackerman Road” while Deputy Day was assisting with a traffic accident, according to a Facebook post from Precinct 4 Bexar County Constable Kathryn Brown.
Brown said Deputy Day was inside his patrol unit entering information into the CAD system when Deputy Hemingway, who was positioned behind him, noticed the unit had caught fire and immediately alerted him. Brown said Deputy Day was able to get out safely and was not injured.
“We are incredibly grateful for Deputy Hemingway’s alertness, the quick response of emergency personnel and, most importantly, that Deputy Day is safe,” Brown wrote. She also thanked Assistant Chief Wade “for promptly alerting our office about the incident.”
“Vehicles can be replaced; lives cannot,” Brown wrote, asking the public to “continue to keep our deputies and all first responders in your prayers as they serve our communities.”
