A woman and her daughter were among three people in moving vehicles who were shot by a man on Friday morning in northeast Houston, according to police, who said the man was subsequently shot by responding law enforcement officers.
Three officers with the Houston Police Department and one with the Texas Department of Public Safety opened fire on the man who was shooting at moving vehicles with an automatic weapon in the 6300 block of North Wayside Drive, said HPD Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir. The man was struck multiple times by the officers and transported to a local hospital, where he was receiving medical treatment Friday afternoon, according to Bashir.
“Upon arriving, officers located that individual and began to give him verbal commands and also told him to drop the weapon,” Bashir said during a news conference. “The officers engaged with the suspect and discharged their weapons multiple times. The suspect was struck more than once.”

A total of three vehicles were struck by gunfire, according to Bashir, who said the people who were shot were in two of those vehicles. All three shooting victims were in stable condition, Bashir said.
None of the officers who responded to the scene was injured, according to Bashir. Per HPD policy, he said, body-worn camera footage from the city police officers involved will be made public within 30 days.
