EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — State Sen. Cesar Blanco, D-El Paso, honored Raiz Federal Credit Union with a resolution, recognizing the credit union’s 90-year history and its contributions of community service in El Paso.
Blanco presented the resolution on Friday, Aug. 14.
The credit union was originally founded by seven El Paso educators and was known as El Paso Teachers Federal Credit Union for years.
Today, Raiz goes beyond financial services by partnering with schools, nonprofits, and community groups to promote financial education, provide scholarships, and support volunteer efforts, the credit union said.
“If you look at the history of Raiz, it started with seven teachers, seven educators who got together and said we need to be able to develop something that allows for loans and things like that,” Blanco said. “Fast forward 90 years, 79,000 members. So it shows how important credit unions are to our community. It demonstrates their strength throughout the Borderland region.
“And more importantly, we see Raiz everywhere,” Blanco added. “We see them in the community. They’re great community partners.”
Max Villaronga, president and CEO of Raiz, said: “Being recognized at the federal, state, and local levels during our 90th year is a deeply meaningful honor, as these awards represent the community that shaped Raiz.
“For 90 years, our members have trusted us to grow with them. Our best tribute is to keep moving forward, investing in our people, technology, and community to serve members wherever they are in life.”
