COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – A weekend fire at the Texas A&M Student Services Building (SSB) has triggered a multi-week closure of several key departments just as the fall semester gets underway.
A small electrical fire broke out Saturday morning on the second floor of the SSB, activating the building’s fire suppression system. While the flames were isolated to the second floor, the sprinklers caused varying degrees of water damage to the northeast portions of both the first and second floors.
Officials are urging students and staff to avoid entering the SSB on Monday, Aug. 17, unless they have essential business, allowing crews to continue damage evaluation and cleanup.
The affected areas of the building are expected to remain closed for at least six weeks. However, the Division of Student Affairs confirmed that all scheduled fall events—including New Student Conferences and Howdy Week activities—will proceed as planned.
Impacted Department Operations and Relocations
Several departments housed in the SSB have adjusted their operations starting Monday, Aug. 17:
Disability Resources: The main office (Suite 122) is closed for repairs. Staff members are working remotely or from temporary on-campus locations. Students should check their email for meeting locations or call 979-845-1637. Note: The testing center was not damaged and remains fully operational. The crisis team and administrator of the day will work out of the Beutel Health Center. Appointments have been moved to telehealth or rescheduled. Normal operations will resume Tuesday, Aug. 18.
