SAN ANTONIO – Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham has slammed a social media post made to celebrate and recognize Indigenous people.

On Tuesday, Buckingham responded to various callouts on social media after The Alamo’s social media pages made a post recognising Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which is held on the same day as Columbus Day.

In the now-deleted post, The Alamo said on Monday that they honor Indigenous Peoples and their communities, highlighting that the Alamo Visitor Center will feature an indigenous peoples gallery, celebrating the people who shaped the region.

“The @TXGLO (Texas General Land Office) is investigating how the Alamo Trust reviews and approves content for social media posts to Official Alamo accounts,” said Buckingham. “We will be holding those responsible accountable and will be implementing a new process to ensure my office has oversight.”

Indigenous Peoples’ Day has been established as an alternative to Columbus Day, with many who celebrate it citing the lasting harm Indigenous tribes on the American continent endured as a result of European colonization.

President Joe Biden famously commemorated the holiday for the first time in 2021, becoming the first president to do so, issuing subsequent proclamations in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
