Dallas Cowboys star Marshawn Kneeland died by suicide, authorities confirmed to the The Dallas Morning News on Thursday, November 6.

Police had been called to do a welfare check at the defensive end’s home in Plano, Texas, on the evening of Wednesday, November 5. According to dispatch audio obtained by TMZ, Kneeland was known to be armed and had a history of mental illness.

Kneeland, 24, was reportedly “texting his family goodbye,” with his girlfriend telling officers he would “end it all,” according to TMZ.

Frisco police said Texas Department of Public Safety troopers attempted to pull over his vehicle for a traffic stop late Wednesday evening before becoming involved in a pursuit, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Kneeland reportedly crashed his car on the Dallas Parkway and continued on foot, the outlet explained. Officers located his body around 1:30 a.m. on November 6 with signs of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Kneeland – who was drafted in the second round of the 2024 NFL draft – had just scored his first touchdown of his NFL career on Monday night after the Cowboys blocked a punt against the Arizona Cardinals.

“It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning. Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization,” the Cowboys said in a statement following Kneeland’s death. “Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”
