Editor’s Note: The video above is an update from Texas DPS on Aug. 13, 2026, about the stolen ambulance pursuit that led to a shooting on I-35 in Austin.
AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Fort Worth Police Department on Monday identified a man who they accuse of stealing an ambulance and leading law enforcement on a chase down Interstate 35, before a crash and shooting on Aug. 13.
The department said its suspect is Benjamin Randall Collins, 26, of Fort Worth, Texas.
He crashed the vehicle in Austin and fired a gun at DPS troopers, the agency said. The troopers returned fire and Collins died at the scene.

No officers were injured. Austin-Travis County EMS took one person to a nearby hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to Texas Highway Patrol.
According to reports, the ambulance was stolen at night from Station Four off Mansfield Road in Fort Worth. The Fort Worth Police Department contacted Texas DPS about the stolen ambulance around 6:30 a.m.; however, it was already in the Austin area.
State troopers were notified that the ambulance was traveling south on I-35 in Williamson County. Troopers attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the driver refused to stop and evaded law enforcement.
The driver rammed multiple vehicles on the interstate during the pursuit, DPS said, before crashing on the I-35 upper deck near E. 41st Street.
