SAN ANTONIO – SAISD voters will decide this fall whether to raise the district’s tax rate and approve a $600 million bond package aimed at everything from classroom upgrades to new buses and technology.

In a news release dated Aug. 17, 2026, the San Antonio ISD said its Board of Trustees voted that night to place a Voter Approval Tax Rate Election, or VATRE, and three bond propositions on the Nov. 3 ballot.

The district said a VATRE allows Texas public school districts to generate additional revenue for day-to-day operations by increasing the Maintenance & Operations tax rate. SAISD’s proposed tax increase is ‘3.17 cents’, which the district estimates would generate $5.5 million in additional tax revenue.

According to the district, the new revenue would help fund three initiatives:

College and career-readiness efforts, including support for Career & Technical Education programs, industry-based certifications, dual credit and early college opportunities, work-based learning, skilled trades pathways, middle school career exploration, and literacy and math initiatives.Teacher pipeline initiatives, including an Associate of Arts in Teaching pathway for high school students, and apprenticeship and community pathways for aspiring educators.Compensation initiatives, including a one-time supplement.

The district also outlined a proposed $600 million bond package split into three propositions. SAISD said bonds are used to finance capital needs such as educational infrastructure, facility improvements and modernization, and that bonds cannot be used for daily operating expenses.

The bond propositions include:

Proposition A: $492 million for school modernization, capital system replacements, and safety and security upgrades. The district said this would include renovations to learning environments; replacement of chillers and boilers, plumbing and utilities, roofing and windows; and additions including a bus fleet with three-point seat belts, a police fleet supporting campus safety and district patrol, strategic site lighting for after-hours campus safety, security fencing and vestibules, fire alarm systems and emergency indicators, and ADA access enhancements.Proposition B: $102 million for information technology improvements, including network infrastructure and teaching and learning devices.Proposition C: $6 million for improvements to Alamo Stadium and Convocation Center.

If voters approve all four proposals, SAISD said the impact to the average homeowner in the district would be an increase of $1.99 a month in 2026. In 2027, the district estimates the impact would be an additional $1.26 for a total of $3.25 a month, and would incrementally rise to $5.76 a month by 2030.

SAISD said property taxes for senior citizens would not be affected by any of the three proposals as long as a homestead exemption and Over-65 exemption application has been filed with the Bexar County Appraisal District, and the homeowner has owned the home as of Jan. 1, 2026.

The district said it will hold information sessions for the community ahead of the November election.
