EL PASO, TEXAS — San Diego Padres minor league catching coordinator Oswaldo Pirela has been detained in El Paso, the team confirmed in a statement.
“We recently became aware of the detainment of minor league catching coordinator Oswaldo Pirela in El Paso, Texas. We are working to gather additional information and will not have any further comment at this time,” the Padres said.
The New York Times reports Pirela was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the El Paso International Airport.
An ICE detainee locator search for Oswaldo Pirela shows a person by that name is currently in ICE custody at the El Paso Processing Center.
The San Diego Padres did not provide additional information about the circumstances surrounding Pirela’s detention.
Pirela serves as the Padres’ minor league catching coordinator and works in the organization’s player development system.
No additional details about his status were immediately available.
This is a developing story.
