The recall is fairly targeted.
According to the FDA-posted announcement, the affected peppers were distributed to Costco Store No. 1487 at 12717 Network Drive in Stafford and Store No. 655 at 8282 Park Lane in Dallas. The jalapeños were repacked by Hardie’s Fresh Foods and sold in clear plastic bags.
The recalled peppers can also be identified by seven lot codes: X2741775, X2741859, X2744163, X2744706, X2746349, X2746490 and X2748743. Production dates listed in the announcement range from July 11 through July 22.
Hardie’s has since stopped producing and distributing the affected product.
The concern is possible Salmonella contamination, which the company said can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain in otherwise healthy people. The bacteria can cause more serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.
The latest recall arrives as jalapeños have become a recurring presence on FDA recall notices this month, although the Hardie’s announcement does not explicitly connect its peppers to the ongoing multistate outbreak.
Chron previously reported on a multistate Salmonella outbreak linked to fresh jalapeños from Sinaloa, Mexico, distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors. Earlier this month, federal health officials were tracking hundreds of illnesses across more than two dozen states, including Texas.
The concerns have also reached restaurants. Earlier this month, Chron reported Chipotle pulled jalapeños from some locations out of an “abundance of caution” after determining peppers distributed from a common lot could potentially be connected to the Salmonella outbreak under investigation. The chain said it replaced the affected peppers with products from different growers.
Chron also reported that Taylor Fresh Foods recalled a lengthy list of prepared foods containing affected jalapeños, including dips, salsas, guacamole and other products distributed to retailers in Texas and across the country.
Anyone who purchased the recalled Hardie’s jalapeños is being urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
