Rockport Councilman Brad Brundrett is on trial for allegedly assaulting ex-mayoral candidate Andrew Kane after a heated property tax discussion.
ROCKPORT, Texas — Update: The jury has found City Councilman Brad Brundrett not guilty.
A Rockport city councilman is standing trial over an alleged altercation with a former mayoral candidate following a city budget workshop last year.

Surveillance video shown in court appears to show Brundrett grabbing Kane and pushing him several feet into a row of chairs. Kane testified that the confrontation began during a heated discussion about property taxes.
Kane said he told Brundrett that the City Council needed to stop lying to residents about their property taxes. Kane alleges Brundrett responded by threatening to assault him if Kane called him a liar again.
Police were called following the altercation. Kane testified that he experienced pain in his left arm, chest and left knee. He also said he has not attended a City Council meeting since the incident because he no longer feels safe.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that Brundrett assaulted and injured Kane. The defense portrayed Kane as aggressive and confrontational, pointing to his criticism of local officials on social media.
The defense also questioned whether Kane’s reported knee injury was caused by the altercation. Kane acknowledged that a nurse had previously told him he might have a torn meniscus, but he said he did not have insurance at the time and never received further medical treatment.
Both sides have rested their cases. The judge is expected to finalize instructions for the jury before closing arguments begin. The case will then be handed over to jurors for deliberations.
