Benjamin Collins was shot and killed by Texas state troopers after he stole an ambulance and drove down I-35. Records reveal he was arrested just days before.
FORT WORTH, Texas — The Fort Worth man who allegedly stole an ambulance and drove it nearly 200 miles down Interstate 35 was arrested by Fort Worth police just days before the incident that would lead to his death, records show.
Benjamin Collins, 26, was shot and killed on Aug. 13 by Texas Department of Public Safety troopers after he allegedly attempted to “ram” into several people on I-35 in Austin, officials said. Earlier that day, Collins allegedly stole an ambulance from Station 4 on Old Mansfield Road. A Fort Worth police report shows the ambulance was stolen sometime between 1:40 and 6 a.m.
Records show that Collins was arrested by Fort Worth police just days before his death.
On Aug. 7, Collins was charged with criminal trespass and resisting arrest, according to Fort Worth police records. He was due in court to face the charges on Sept. 9, according to court documents.
It’s not clear how Collins gained access to an ambulance. The incident is under investigation.
