LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Lubbock County Judge Curtis Parrish is asking the public to help fund a bell tower at the West Texas State Veterans Cemetery.
“I hope families feel very honored by what we are doing for their service member,” Parrish said.
The cemetery has been open a couple of months. Parrish hopes to improve what he called a small but meaningful show of respect there. A formal dedication of the cemetery is planned in a few weeks.
Many honored service members have already been laid to rest there.
“Well, the response is overwhelming. And sometimes it’s just you’re overcome with emotions when you hear the sound coming from this bell tower to honor the loved one who is now being laid to rest in this hallowed ground,” Parrish said.
The bell tower plays music from sunrise until sunset, when it plays ‘Taps’ to close the day. When a service member is interred, the tower play their military song to further honor their service to the nation.
Parrish is asking for the community’s help to finish the project.
“We’re still just a little bit of funds short. So we’re asking folks, ‘would you please help us? Would you please donate to help us with this amazing tower?’” He said.
Donations can be made by bringing a check to the Lubbock County Courthouse of to Victory Bank.
Parrish is uring community members to attend the dedication and ribbon cutting at the West Texas State Veterans Cemetery on Sept. 4 at 10 a.m.
