CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A large new gas station taking shape on North Padre Island is becoming one of the latest visible signs of continued development in the growing Island community.
Construction has resumed on the project near the intersection leading drivers toward State Highway 361 and Port Aransas after work initially began more than a year ago and later paused.

For Island leaders, the size and location of the development point to more than just another option for drivers looking to fill up.
Lauren Harris, a member of the Island Strategic Action Committee, said businesses choosing to invest in the area can be an indicator of the traffic and continued growth they expect to see.
“If they think they’ve got enough volume and enough traffic, then they’re going to build,” Harris said. “If they didn’t think they were going to have it, they wouldn’t build out here.”
Harris said the number of convenience stores operating or being developed on the Island is another marker of what businesses believe is possible in the area.
Corpus Christi City Councilman Mark Scott also called the new development a positive addition for North Padre Island.
“I think it’s good for the Island to get a new convenience store,” Scott said, while noting that he views the project and ongoing discussions surrounding Highway 361 as separate issues.
Still, the development comes as traffic and infrastructure remain major topics for Island residents and local leaders.
Highway 361 serves as a primary route between North Padre Island and Port Aransas, and recent deadly crashes along the roadway have renewed concerns about safety. DPS and Corpus Christi police have increased patrols along the highway following two recent crashes that killed three people.
Local and state leaders are also preparing to meet about safety and the future of the corridor, including the long-discussed possibility of widening portions of Highway 361.
Scott said planning for future expansion is already being considered as development moves north.
“Right now any new project that’s platted north of the state park has to set aside right-of-way so TxDOT can widen 361,” Scott said.
The widening of Highway 361 is one piece of a larger, long-term discussion about mobility on North Padre Island. Other conversations have included a possible second bridge and potential future changes to the existing JFK Causeway.
While those projects could take years to develop, new businesses such as the gas station are taking shape now — offering another visible sign of an Island community continuing to grow.
