LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Museum at Texas Tech wanted to go in a different direction when it came to celebrating 250 years of America.
Tech called on residents to donate materials that showcase that rich history, and the community went above and beyond to make sure that became a reality.
“Everybody has unique pieces of history and material culture in their own homes, and this one we just themed it around American independence,” curator of history Cameron Saffell said. “They are all important things to you, and when you come through this exhibit, you’ll see what was important things to other people.”
Inside the America 250 exhibit, you’ll notice many things made in 1976 to celebrate America’s bicentennial, which includes this spirit of ’76 Agri-King tractor, quilts, plates and this crotched potholder.
No matter the item, everything has a unique story behind it.
“We’ve got a handmade dress for a little girl whose birthday was July 4th,” Saffell said. “She wasn’t born in 1976, she was born in the early 70’s, but they gave it to her as a birthday present, so she wore it for the bicentennial. She later had a child and her child wore it at a couple of events.”
That’s not all though. His swallow tail flag is the oldest item on display, dating back to the late 19th century. Other items such as the Thomas Edison phonograph accompanied with sheet music, embroidered pieces and commemorative coins help pain the picture of what America is all about.
“The real heart of all of this is it’s the community and how we all see and celebrate our own history,” Saffel said.
You have until the end of Labor Day weekend to see this pieces of art and history in person. It’s your chance to see how Lubbock has done its part in telling the story of America, through this vast collection of material.
