El Paso County residents gather ahead of Buc-ee’s appeal hearing

  • August 20, 2026

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) – Wednesday night, a group opposed to a Buc-ee’s in the Monument area gathered to discuss the proposed project.

They said they want their position to be clear before El Paso County commissioners hear from the community next week.

On August 27, commissioners will be deciding if the proposed Buc-ee’s is considered to be a “convenience store” and whether the company’s proposed use for the lane near I-25 and County Line Road is allowed under county code for that area.

In late June, the county said its Planning and Community Development director was not able to determine whether Buc-ee’s should be classified as a “convenience store” under the county’s land development code.

The meeting on August 27 will hear an appeal with community input.

The meeting Wednesday night was about explaining the rules of the upcoming hearing and the time limit people will have to speak.

The president of Tri-Lakes Preservation and a Monument resident both said they are worried about the amount of resources that they believe a Buc-ee’s would take from their community and said they are willing to battle to protect an area they said they care deeply about.

”I’m all for it. I’m pro-business, I’m pro-growth. But we only have one Monument Hill,” Former Director of Meteorology at the Air Force Academy Dr. Paul Homan said.

“We’re ready to fight for our character of our community, and we’re ready to fight for public safety, frankly, because we believe that, you know, a mega gas station at the top of Monument Hill could be dangerous,” President of Tri Lakes Preservation Shawn Sawyer said.

11 News reached out to El Paso County about the meeting held Wednesday night, and they said, “Because the Aug. 27 hearing is a quasi-judicial proceeding, it would not be appropriate for commissioners to provide comment ahead of the hearing. The County’s focus is on ensuring a fair and transparent process.”

The county said it encourages residents interested in the meeting to review hearing and public participation information on the Clerk and Recorder’s Public Hearing Participation website.

11 News reached out to Buc-ee’s for comment. This article will be updated when we hear back.
