LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Lubbock County Historical Commission unveiled a new Texas Historical Marker recognizing Lubbock Auto Auction on Thursday, August 20. The unveiling took place directly on the auction floor, which is rarely open to the public.
The marker recognizes the wholesale business’ eighth decade of operation in Lubbock.
Founded in 1947, Lubbock Auto Auction is the oldest auction of its kind in Texas and west of the Mississippi River, and the second-oldest in the United States. Operating exclusively for auto dealers every Thursday, the business has shown long-term resilience, including continuing scheduled auctions under a big top tent after a devastating fire in December 1971.
The Official Texas Historical Marker program highlights local landmarks to preserve Lubbock County’s history, with over 80 markers erected to date.
