Two Northside Independent School District school buses were involved in separate accidents on Thursday morning in Northside Independent School District. No injuries were reported.
The first incident near Babcock and Eckhert roads involved a bus carrying 47 Rhodes Elementary School students.
The bus and a private vehicle collided as the bus was making a turn, district spokesman Barry Perez said. A second bus went to the scene to take students to school, and the school principal went there to assist, he said. Parents were notified.
A short time later, a second accident involving a Northside bus was reported near La Cantera Parkway and the Interstate 10 frontage road.
One student from Brandeis High School was on the bus, Perez said.
“Preliminary report was that the private vehicle may have cut in front of the bus — but I can not confirm that,” he said in an emailed statement, noting that San Antonio police responded.
TxDOT officials recommend drivers follow school buses at a safe distance and keep an eye out for children boarding and exiting the buses. A driver passing a school bus in either direction while the bus is stopped with flashing red lights or an extended stop sign could receive a citation with a $1,250 fine for a first offense.
The department advises students to stand as far back from the curb as possible while waiting for a bus. Students should wait until the bus has completely stopped and the driver signals it’s safe to board; listen to the driver and remain seated; and cross only in front of the bus when exiting, waiting for the driver to signal when it’s safe to cross the street.
