Woody Harrelson is shining some light on his new Texas-set comedy series co-starring Matthew McConaughey.
“Brothers” sees Harrelson and McConaughey play fictionalized version of themselves, whose lifelong friendship is thrown into chaos when they learn that they might actually be brothers. The eight-episode Apple TV series filmed in Austin last year and premieres on Sept. 23.
Speaking at the Sarajevo Film Festival via Variety, Harrelson joked to the audience that the show is unlike some of his and McConaughey’s prior collaborations.
“If you like ‘True Detective’ and you want more of that, it’s not this,” Harrelson said. “We are playing ourselves but fictional, like ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm.’”

The series is based on Harrelson’s viral story that his father met McConaughey’s mother right around the time the actor was conceived. Although, the brother connection is not the only focal point of the show.
After Harrelson’s daughter’s wedding falls apart, he loads up the family and heads to Austin for a stay on McConaughey’s Texas ranch, according to Apple TV. It’s there where McConaughey’s mother, played by Holland Taylor, accidentally reveals that the two friends might actually be brothers.
While Harrelson turns the ranch upside down for the truth, McConaughey juggles a potential run for governor of Texas.

“Brothers” began filming in Austin in March 2025 and wrapped that fall after pausing production in mid-June when showrunner David West Read exited the project due to creative differences. Shorty after Read’s departure, Lee Eisenberg came on board as showrunner.
In addition to the previously mentioned cast, “Brothers” also stars includes Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, Noah Carganilla, Highdee Kuan and Oona Yaffe.
