SAN ANTONIO – Tx — With the Missions baseball team preparing to move downtown, the question now is what happens to Nelson Wolff Municipal Stadium?
Tonight city leaders held the 2nd of 3 meetings to get feedback from the community.
The City of San Antonio has hired a firm to explore possibilities for uses of Wolff Stadium.
For more than 30 years Wolff Stadium has been home to the Missions. Wolff Stadium is the oldest ballpark in Texas and no longer meets the MLB’s standards of operation.
As construction of the new stadium moves forward, District 6 councilman Ric Galvan says he’s open to ideas for the new stadium.
We have a 40 plus acre site here right behind us at the darner building where we are at,” Galvan said. “We’re talking about what could be there. What could serve the community there. And how to make sure the community is right at the center of this.”
The repurposing firm hired by the city presented three different models, giving the community options for the location of a new park. Joseph Guerra who lives next to Wolff Stadium, says a new park is needed, but he’d also like to see other amenities added.
“I’d like to see the park area increased,” Guerra said. “I’d like to see a senior center. A full-time senior center here because it’s necessary. There is nothing at the south end of district 6. Actually, we gather people from all the surrounding districts. The people feel like family here.”
The new Missions stadium is expected to be completed by the 2029 baseball season. The next community meeting is September 12 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cuellar Community Center.
