DPS: One killed, one in critical condition after three-vehicle accident near Robstown

A three-vehicle crash just south of Robstown killed a 22-year-old on Thursday morning and sent his 21-year-old passenger to the hospital in critical condition.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A three-vehicle accident on Thursday morning killed a 22-year-old and sent his 21-year-old passenger to the hospital in critical condition, according to Texas Department of Safety Public Information Officer Staff Sergeant Rob Mallory.

The crash happened just after midnight, Mallory said. DPS troopers responded to the accident at the intersection of Farm-to-Market 2826 and County Road 77, right near the Robstown landfill.

According to Mallory, troopers arrived at the scene and through a preliminary investigation determined that a 2023 Kia Sportage was traveling southbound on County Road 77, approaching the intersection with FTM 2826. Mallory said. At the same time, a 2024 Mack Truck Tractor towing a 2011 Step Tanker was traveling westbound on FTM 2826 through the intersection.

According to Mallory, the Kia disregarded the stop sign and struck the rear of the trailer in the intersection, and was dragged before separating.

Mallory said the driver of the Kia, 22-year-old Raynaldo Garcia of Robstown, was pronounced dead at the scene. His 21-year-old passenger was transported to Christus Spohn Shoreline Hospital in critical condition.

A 2003 Mercury SPG was traveling eastbound on FTM2826 and sustained minor damage to its passenger side from the debris of the crash, Mallory said.

The drivers of the other two vehicles were not injured.

The crash remains under investigation by DPS, Mallory said.
