Arrest warrant affidavits reveal more information about a shooting on Sunday, Aug. 16, that wounded an off-duty Arlington police officer.

The 33-year-old man accused of shooting an off-duty Arlington police officer in Dallas early Sunday also faces an aggravated assault charge against the officer’s sister, according to court records.
As of Tuesday morning, Darriyous Johunkin was being held in the Dallas County Jail on a $235,000 bond.
Officers were called to an apartment complex in the 1400 block of North Cockrell Hill Road about 1 a.m. Sunday, about four hours before the shooting. A woman — who police say had been involved in an on-again, off-again relationship with the suspect for seven years — reported that Johunkin approached her outside her apartment.
The suspect was argumentative and threw the woman’s phone over a fence when she tried to call 911, according to Johunkin’s arrest warrant affidavit obtained by WFAA-TV. He then hit her on the left side of the face with his fist, the woman said.
Responding officers confirmed the victim had a golf-ball-sized bump on the side of her head, the affidavit states. The woman said she ended up on the ground, but she wasn’t sure if she fell or if the suspect pushed her. In a later interview with detectives, the victim said Johunkin had access to a gun and had previously threatened to shoot himself in front of her.
Around 5 a.m., a white Dodge Charger was seen running a stop sign at 3100 South Westmoreland Road in the west Oak Cliff area. Officers stopped the vehicle, and the driver said he was an off-duty Arlington police officer, and he’d been shot in the stomach, according to Johunkin’s second arrest warrant affidavit.
The officer, identified as Adrian Abner, turned his handgun over to Dallas police, the affidavit states. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment. According to the affidavit, the woman Johunkin allegedly assaulted is Abner’s sister.
Johunkin came back to the scene and told officers he’d been involved in the shooting and an earlier family violence incident, police said. He was arrested and interviewed by a detective at Dallas Police Headquarters.
Johunkin said he and Abner had agreed to meet at 3100 Pentagon Parkway that morning. Abner fired his gun at him first, according to the suspect’s testimony in the affidavit, and Johunkin returned fire, striking Abner.
Detectives were not able to interview Abner because he was in surgery, the affidavit states.
The suspect also told investigators that he and the woman he allegedly assaulted had seen each other when Johunkin went to visit a friend at the apartment complex. He said the woman “ran at him,” fell down, and hit her head on the concrete, the affidavit states.
Johunkin was arrested after his interview at police headquarters, according to the affidavit. Jail records show he faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault causing bodily injury/family violence, and interference with an emergency request for assistance.
It’s not clear if Johunkin has obtained an attorney to represent him.
The Dallas police investigation is ongoing. The Arlington police Internal Affairs division will also be reviewing the shooting to determine whether policies and procedures were followed.
