Projected starting free safety Jacob FIelds was dismissed from TCU due to a physical altercation with a teammate in the locker room, the Star-Telegram has learned.
The program announced the dismissal of Fields on Tuesday, four days after an aggravated assault was reported in the John Justin locker rooms, according to the TCU crime and fire log. The incident occurred at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 13, and was reported at 2:29 p.m. Aug. 14, according to the log.
The case remains open and the Star-Telegram is awaiting a response to its request for a copy of the report.
A source with direct knowledge of the incident confirmed Fields’ involvement in a fight with an offensive player. Fields is described as “remorseful” and “is taking accountability,” but the source also believes the incident could’ve been avoided.
According to the source, tensions began brewing between Fields and his teammates earlier this month in fall camp. The source said Fields felt targeted by teammates with insults and threats, including multiple moments when was allegedly spit on by a teammate.
He reached out multiple times to the coaching staff, but the source said there were no attempts to de-escalate the brewing tension, which ultimately led into the confrontation in the locker room. The source doesn’t believe head coach Sonny Dykes knew the full extent of the issues in the locker room.
Dykes declined to comment. A spokesperson said the program had no comment since Fields is no longer on the team.
Fields, a senior, was one of the biggest transfer portal additions for the Horned Frogs this off-season after being brought in from Louisiana Tech.
Fields was voted Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year last year with the Bulldogs and was in line to be the replacement for All-Big 12 safety and second round NFL draft pick Bud Clark.
TCU opens the season Aug. 29 vs. North Carolina in Dublin.
