WEEKEND CLOSURES: TxDOT to close northbound I-35 frontage road and Exit 164B near Rittiman

SAN ANTONIO – Drivers on Interstate 35 on the Northeast Side should plan for multiple weekend and overnight closures near Rittiman Road and the I-410 South interchange as work continues on the I-35 Northeast Expansion Program.

The Texas Department of Transportation said the northbound I-35 frontage road north of Rittiman Road, including northbound I-35 Exit 164B, is scheduled to close from 10 a.m. to midnight Saturday, Aug. 22, 2026, weather permitting. Drivers on the northbound I-35 frontage road who need to continue beyond Rittiman Road will be detoured by turning right onto Rittiman Road, then left onto Fratt Road.

Drivers on Center Park Boulevard, Dinn Drive, and Remount Drive who are trying to access northbound I-35 will head toward Fratt Road and turn left, then turn left onto Eisenhauer Road and follow it back to the northbound I-35 frontage road.

Drivers on the northbound I-35 mainlanes who planned to exit to Eisenhauer Road via Exit 164B will continue to Exit 165 to enter the northbound I-35 frontage road, make a U-turn at Walzem Road to the southbound I-35 frontage road, then turn left or right onto Eisenhauer Road.

TxDOT also said the northbound I-35 frontage road at the I-35 and I-410 South interchange is scheduled to close from 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, to 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, 2026, weather permitting.

During that closure, drivers on the northbound I-35 frontage road at the I-410 South interchange will keep right and follow signs to I-410 South, entering the southbound I-410 South frontage road, then use the signalized turnaround at Binz Engleman Road to return to the northbound I-35 frontage road.

A third closure is planned for the I-35 mainlanes at the I-410 South interchange. TxDOT said both the northbound and southbound I-35 mainlanes are scheduled to close from 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, 2026, until 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, 2026, weather permitting.

Northbound I-35 drivers will exit at Exit 163 to the northbound I-35 frontage road, stay on the frontage road and re-enter the mainlanes using the entrance ramp after Dinn Drive.

Southbound I-35 drivers will exit at Exit 162 to the southbound I-35 frontage road and may re-enter the mainlanes using the entrance ramp after George Beach Avenue.

Drivers looking to access southbound I-410 South will use the connector ramp south of Rittiman Road.

TxDOT urged drivers to follow detour signage during the closures.
