(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — Sheriff and Fire Warden Joseph Roybal has downgraded fire restrictions for all unincorporated areas of El Paso County from Stage II to Stage I, effective on Friday, Aug. 21, at 1 p.m.
“Recent rainfall and improving weather patterns across the Pikes Peak Region have significantly reduced fire danger, allowing us to move from Stage II to Stage I Fire Restrictions,” the Sheriff said. “This change reflects careful monitoring of local conditions and extensive coordination with our district fire chiefs.”
Sheriff Roybal said while the recent moisture has been helpful, he cautioned that fire season is far from over.
“Stage I Fire Restrictions remain in place because the potential for dangerous wildfires still exists,” he added. “Every resident and visitor plays a role in protecting our communities, open spaces, and natural resources by using caution with any activity capable of starting a fire.”
Deputies ask that suspected violations of the Order be reported by calling (719) 390-5555.
“Sheriff Roybal will continue to review weather and fire-danger conditions and notify the community of any changes to restrictions as appropriate,” according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
In addition to fire restrictions being moved to Stage I in El Paso County, Fire Marshal Kris Cooper of the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) downgraded the current burn ban order to a burn restriction level, effective Friday at noon.
According to CSFD, the following activities are prohibited during burn restrictions:
Recreational fires where the fire is not contained in a portable or fixed fireplace or appliance.
Small engine equipment operation without a properly installed and functioning spark arrestor.
Outdoor smoking in all city-owned parks and open spaces.
A permit is required for the following:
“Violations of the burn restrictions may result in fines, imprisonment, or both, as allowed by City ordinance,” CSFD wrote.
