SAN ANTONIO – The Gunn Family Coyote Dog Park is officially back open at La Cantera a little after a month since a tornado struck one of the busiest areas of the northwest side. The dogs and their owners excited to return to their favorite spot. Tabitha Coleman and her dog, Adra Jane, were some of the first to enter the dog park after that tornado struck July 15th.
“When I said, let’s go to the park, she looked at me and she was basically ready to run to the car. She knew exactly what I meant,” says Coleman. The park reopening early Friday morning, giving away free coffee and pup cups to visitors. Bexar County Commissioner, Grant Moody, opening the park.
“The county Parks and Rec Department and the Spurs organization have been working feverishly to try to get this park reopened and this morning we did. So we’re really excited about it. Obviously we had a great turnout. No, I don’t know, probably 50 dogs out here. So we’re excited to have it reopened,” says Moody. Donna Wilson and her dog, Logan, visit about two to three times a week.
“I have another dog too named Daisy, but this is their favorite park. This is like their Disneyland. And it’s just very convenient and close to my home,” says Wilson. The park looking a little different than it did before. The tornado taking about 80% of the park’s trees.
“All the trees are gone. There’s not enough shade, but that’ll be alright,” says Wilson.
Commissioner Moody tells me that more trees will be planted in the middle of the park in the coming months, providing more shade to park visitors.
