No. 8 Texas Tech is facing No. 7 BYU in a game with implications on the race for the Big 12 and a College Football Playoff spot.

The big matchup drew ESPN’s College GameDay to Lubbock for the first time in 17 years.

Moments before kickoff, the ESPN crew, along with Texas Tech product and guest picker Patrick Mahomes, made their predictions for the matchup.

Mahomes, unsurprisingly, is riding with his Red Raiders.

“The energy in Lubbock is amazing. The football team’s had a great year,” Mahomes said. “I’m looking forward to the defense showing the country what they’ve been doing all year. Jacob Rodriguez, get Heisman votes in to him. We’re going with the guns up and the Texas Tech Red Raiders.”

The rest of the crew — Nick Saban, Pat McAfee, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard and Rece Davis — also picked Texas Tech to win.

“Seemingly everything that is right about this current NIL, transfer portal era is happening right here in Lubbock, Texas.” McAfee said. “This is the Texas Tech Red Raiders’ time. And I’m rolling with the Texas Tech Red Raiders!”
