Santos Antonio Alvarez is charged with capital murder in the February killing of Jon Kross Perez.

SAN ANTONIO — For 193 days, a grieving San Antonio mother waited for word that the third suspect accused in her son’s killing was behind bars.

Santos Antonio Alvarez, 22, was arrested overnight by the U.S. Marshals Lone Star Fugitive Task Force with help from the San Antonio Police Department’s Covert Response Unit. Authorities tracked Alvarez to the 1000 block of Gillette Boulevard on San Antonio’s south side, bringing what the Marshals described as more than six months on the run to an end.

Alvarez was booked into the Bexar County Jail early Friday on a capital murder charge. His bond is set at $500,000.

The charge stems from the Feb. 8 killing of Jon Kross Perez outside an after-hours bar in the 1600 block of Rigsby Avenue on San Antonio’s southeast side.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Perez was leaving the business when a group of men allegedly attacked him. Witnesses told investigators Perez was punched and kicked before suspects began pulling jewelry from his neck. Police said multiple gunshots were then fired.

Investigators said Perez was wearing several necklaces that night, including one described as having a thick chain and large pendant. Police later determined necklaces were missing after the shooting.

Police allege Alvarez participated in the assault and robbery. The affidavit identifies three defendants in the case and alleges one of the other men fired the shots that killed Perez.

The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force joined the search for Alvarez in June and conducted what the U.S. Marshals Service called an extensive fugitive investigation before tracking him down.

“Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family, who have waited more than six months for this day,” U.S. Marshal Susan Pamerleau said. “We hope this arrest brings them a measure of closure.”

Of the two other suspects identified in arrest documents, the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed one died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The other, Angel Puente, remains jailed on a $250,000 bond.

The case remains pending.
