SAN ANTONIO – As San Antonio deals with the hottest temperatures of the summer, CPS Energy is encouraging residents to cut back on energy usage during the peak heating of the day. Experts say it can help relieve stress on the grid, as well as save homeowners money on their electric bills.
“Typically, you know, some people say they save between 40 and 50 percent of the electricity bill that gets cut in half,” says Joe Corchado, owner of Beluga Air. He says cranking the temperature of your home way up during the day to save money is a myth. He says only a small change can go a long way.
“Keeping your temperature maybe two degrees higher than what you desire. So when you get home, the unit doesn’t have to overwork itself just to get back at desired temperature,” says Corchado. He says one of the most effective things people can do is something that often gets overlooked. Instead of looking at your thermostat, people should be turning their attention upwards to the attic.
“Having insulation is more important than ever because this is how you’re going to be able to retain the coldness in your house,” says Corchado. And as this hot stretch continues, people are left to figure out ways to keep their cooling bills under control. We asked San Antonio residents what they’re doing.
“In our house. We keep our AC turned like up, like the temperature during the day. And try to keep my blinds closed,” says Meredith Napierala.
“So we put a nice deck and then that screening that goes on the outside of the deck. So that really helps a lot,” says Anna Stefonowicz.
