Texas’ top recruit Jalen Brewster is transferring from Cedar Hill High School to Georgia’s Buford High School, according to Rivals.
Brewster, a five-star defensive lineman and a Texas Tech pledge, is 247Sports’ No. 4 recruit nationwide. He won’t be with Cedar Hill as the Longhorns face Crowley in a season-opening non-district game Friday.
“Transferring to Buford came down to what was best for my future,” Brewster wrote in a statement sent to Rivals. “This move allows me to reach my goal of graduating in December while staying on track academically and athletically. I’m grateful for my time at Cedar Hill and excited for what’s ahead at Buford.”
Brewster is one of many top Dallas-Fort Worth recruits that have left Texas high school football. Trophy Club Byron Nelson’s George Toia, the No. 3 defensive recruit in the Fort Worth-area, transferred to Florida’s Westminster Academy.
Two more standout athletes left the area after their eligibility was denied due to transfers for athletic purposes: Four-star quarterback Colton Nussmeier and five-star cornerback John Meredith III.
Nussmeier was denied at Denton Ryan and transferred to Louisiana’s Archbishop Rummel, while Meredith was denied at North Crowley and reclassified to enroll early at Texas. At the time, Meredith was the top recruit in the Fort Worth-area.
Brewster, with a 6-foot-3, 300 pound frame, is regarded as the nation’s No. 2 defensive recruit. He’ll join a Buford squad that posted a perfect 15-0 record last season and is currently ranked No. 7 nationwide by MaxPreps.
Brewster is the highest rated recruit to commit to Texas Tech in the era of modern recruiting ratings. Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire served as head coach of Cedar Hill from 2002 to 2016.
