Texas Tech police highlight safety technology

  • August 24, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Traffic increased in Lubbock and Levelland Monday as Texas Tech University, Lubbock Christian University and South Plains College began their fall semester.

Drivers were advised to watch for increased traffic on 19th Street and Highway 114 heading toward Levelland.

Texas Tech students are settling back into campus life this week.

Caitlyn Jeffries, with the Texas Tech Police Department, reminded students about technology available in an emergency.

Blue light emergency phones are located across campus. Students can walk up, press the button and be immediately connected with dispatch and a GPS locator that shows their location.

Jeffries said the department also wants to build stronger connections with students.

“We’re human just like everyone else, we’re here for their safety, to protect them. And to have someone to go to if if they are concerned or scared,” Jeffries said.

Jeffries said Texas Tech police have jurisdiction in any county in which the university owns property, meaning officers can help students even if they are off campus.
