SAN ANTONIO — H-E-B has begun construction on a major renovation project at its Las Palmas store on the city’s West Side.

The Castroville Road location was originally built as a department store in the 1950s and became an H-E-B in 1982. The store will receive a modernized storefront, a redesigned interior layout and expanded product offerings.

H-E-B expects the project to be completed by late 2027. The store will remain open during construction.

The company said the investment reflects its continued commitment to the Las Palmas community, where the retailer has operated for decades.

The renovation will expand the store’s shopping area and existing departments, according to H-E-B. Floral and produce departments will move to the front of the store, while new display cases and refrigeration will be installed throughout several departments.

Customers can also expect more grab-and-go meal options in an expanded Meal Simple department and a new Sushiya area featuring sushi and Asian grill items, including rice and noodle bowls.

The store’s pharmacy will be expanded and include two drive-thru lanes to accommodate more customers. H-E-B also plans to update administrative areas, employee breakrooms and customer restrooms.

The Curbside staging area will move closer to dedicated pickup parking spaces. H-E-B said the change is expected to help employees deliver groceries more quickly, reducing customer wait times and allowing for additional pickup time slots.

Outside, the project includes a refreshed storefront and new entryways designed to complement the building’s original architectural style. The store’s parking lot has undergone recent maintenance and repair work aimed at improving traffic flow for customers and Curbside users.
