AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – An 18-year-old Tascosa graduate is back in Texas 52 days after suffering a catastrophic brain injury during a graduation trip to Thailand.
Thalia was with her family on a trip to Thailand in July before she planned to begin studying for a career in health care when she collapsed and was rushed to a hospital in Thailand.
Doctors discovered a severe brain hemorrhage requiring multiple emergency brain surgeries and placed Thalia on a ventilator.
Nearly two months later, Thalia remains on a ventilator, but doctors say the swelling in her brain has stabilized.
She has been receiving care in Thailand since the accident, while her family worked to bring her back home.
Thalia has made advancements in her recovery.
She is waking up, opening her eyes and moving her legs.
On Friday, Thalia, her father and a medical team arrived in Dallas.
“For me, it’s a sense of relief,” said Andy Keopraseuth, Thalia’s father.
“That’s what I was going to say,” said Lalita Bermudez, Thalia’s mother.
“Yeah, she’s back. She’s closer to home. We could do a lot more for her here than in Thailand. So it’s been a big weight off our shoulders. I mean, it’s still, you know, we still have a long journey, but it’s just one step closer, you know,” said Andy.
Thalia is receiving care at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas and will go through recovery, rehabilitation and receive ongoing medical care.
Doctors were running more tests Monday, and her family says they do not know exactly what her recovery will look like.
Her family says her journey is not over and this is just the beginning.
Now that Thalia is home, her family says they will close the GoFundMe.
Any funds already raised will remain dedicated to her recovery and medical care.
