SAN ANTONIO – Three people were reportedly hospitalized after a fire broke out inside an elevator shaft at the Bexar County Jail.
At 5:40 p.m. on Monday, crews responded to reports of a structure fire at the Bexar County Jail, near the corner of Buena Vista and Comal Street in downtown.
When first responders arrived, they found a small fire in a closet area and began investigating further, ultimately finding that a fire had broken out inside an elevator shaft.
According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, there was construction work underway in an elevator shaft when something involving the machinery apparently caught fire.
One SERT team member cut himself on the box holding the water hose. Another SERT team member was taken for evaluation as a precaution for possible low oxygen exposure.
One inmate was also being taken out as a precaution for possible low oxygen exposure.
Investigators are still working to determine what caused the machinery to catch fire. The investigation is ongoing.
