LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A citizens advocacy group called “Save Lubbock” has submitted a petition to the city council seeking a pause on data center development in Lubbock.
The group spent two months collecting the signatures required to bring the matter before the council as a referendum.
Organizer Stephen Sanders said the effort brought together residents across political lines.
“This is the first time I seen Democrats and Republicans or Libertarians or whoever stand together since 9-11, that’s the truth, and so it’s been really good to see people working together, standing together, for one cause, and that is to protect our city,” Sanders said.
The petition now goes to the city secretary’s office, which will validate the signatures and determine whether the action item is legitimate. If validated, it will go before the city council for a vote.
Lubbock Mayor Mark McBrayer was present in the lobby of Citizens Tower to watch the submission. He said he supports residents using the political process.
“I am always happy for people to take advantage of the political process, and it can get crazy in some cities but Lubbock doesn’t do crazy too much, people pretty much respect the process, respect each other,” McBrayer said.
