Several people have been treated and hospitalized for smoke inhalation following a large apartment fire in Fort Worth early Tuesday.
Firefighters are still at the Mariposa Park Apartments in the 6700 block of Calmont Avenue monitoring hot spots after spending hours putting the fire out, said Craig Trojack, a spokesman for the Fort Worth Fire Department. The department estimates between 50 to 100 people have been displaced by the fire, but it’s still unclear, Trojack said.
“We’re waiting to hear back from property management to get those accurate numbers of how many actual units are there, and how many people,” he said.
The fire had already spread through the attic of the garden-style apartment complex as fire crews arrived at about 5:30 a.m., requiring a second-alarm to be called, Trojack said. A third-alarm was called about 35 minutes later.
A firefighter and two people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. The firefighter was able to assist with the fire after receiving medical assistance.
Trojack said two people were taken to local hospitals for smoke inhalation as well. Their current condition is unknown.
A majority of the complex was left extensively damaged by the fire, Trojack said.
A shelter has been set up at R.D. Evans Community Center at 3242 Lackland Road to help those impacted by the fire, said Winston Henvey, a spokesman for the American Red Cross North Texas Region.
“Our hearts go out to the residents who were affected by the multifamily fire this morning,” Henvey said.
Since Sunday, five firefighters in Dallas-Fort Worth have been injured while responding to fires. A burst of flames hospitalized two Fort Worth firefighters with burn injuries Monday night while fighting a fire at a home in the 7600 block of Crowley Road. They are both listed in stable condition, fire officials said.
A Dallas Fire-Rescue firefighter was taken to a hospital after receiving a non-life-threatening injury to their arm while trying to put out flames at a house fire Sunday evening in the 6900 block of Echo Bluff Drive.
Two Dallas firefighters sustained non-life-threatening burn injuries Sunday morning while battling a blaze at an East Oak Cliff home in the 4600 block of Wadsworth Drive.
