LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Joel Thompson, director of facilities with Frenship ISD, says new renovations are about the district investing in the learning environment.
This newest round of investment began in 2024, when voters passed a $189.5 million bond, with 28% of that amount going into renovations to existing campuses in Frenship ISD.
Thompson says the next phase began this May and its already paying dividends.
“It’s been pretty amazing,” Thompson said. “We were just having a discussion a little bit ago just at the difference in a short amount of time. They’ve done some pretty amazing work very quickly, and it has absolutely changed the feel of the hallways and the classrooms for the positive.”
These renovations are from the ground up. From new floors and walls to light and ceiling fixes, and even new classroom furniture, these upgrades look to put students in the best situation possible over the course of their high school years.
“You’re seeing freshman, or any other student that comes through, seeing a community that’s investing in their learning environment,” Thompson said.
But this isn’t something that happens overnight.
“This building is 40 years old, or at least the original part of it is,” Thompson said. “As the community has grown, as the school has grown, it’s been added onto over two dozen times, and so from one section of the building to the other, it’s not always a uniform transition because of different times it was built in.”
It will take roughly four-and-a-half years to complete all projects inside the high school. As crews continue to work on these projects, Thompson hopes this can bring Frenship High School together and bring out the best in students.
“The goal is that, at the end of the day, you’ve got an upgraded learning environment,” Thompson said. “Better lighting, better furniture, a better place for them to learn, but a place that still feels like Frenship High School.”
