More than 50 residents have been displaced, and several people including a firefighter suffered smoke inhalation during a west Fort Worth apartment fire Tuesday, Aug. 25, officials say.

More than 50 residents have been displaced, two people were taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation, and three were treated at the scene during a massive west Fort Worth apartment fire early Tuesday, officials said.
More than 30 fire units were dispatched to the Mariposa Park Apartments, at 6701 Calmont Ave., starting about 5:30 a.m. Fort Worth Fire Department officials said it was a three-alarm fire.
About 50 apartments were damaged in the blaze, fire officials said. The department initially estimated 100 residents were affected. In an update Tuesday evening, officials said a total of 57 residents were displaced from their homes.
A firefighter and four residents were treated for smoke inhalation.
Flames had spread through the attic and roof of the two-story apartment building when firefighters arrived, and the structural integrity of the building began to fail quickly, the department said. Once all residents were safely evacuated, firefighters used defensive tactics to extinguish the fire from outside, using aerials to pump thousands of gallons of water into the building.

The American Red Cross is providing emergency assistance to the displaced residents.
Red Cross North Texas Region officials and the City of Fort Worth worked together to open an evacuation point at Evans Recreation Center for affected residents. The shelter is at 3242 Lackland Road, and disaster assistance is free, according to the Red Cross.

In a separate incident, three adults were displaced and two firefighters were injured in a house fire late Monday night in south Fort Worth.
