Corpus Christi sits at the top of the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world, which is the single fact that should shape a visit here. The city itself gives you an aircraft carrier moored across the ship channel, a Gulf coast aquarium beside it, and a bayfront you can walk end to end for nothing. The mistake most visitors make is treating the beaches as one thing: the bay beaches downtown are free and calm, the Gulf beaches out on the islands charge for parking or entry and are an entirely different day out.

Take North Beach first: the USS Lexington opens at nine and the queue for its ticket booths is real, and the aquarium is a two minute walk from it. Swim off the free bay beach between the two of them rather than driving anywhere for the water. Come back over the Harbor Bridge in the afternoon for the seawall and the art museum, checking whether the day you are there is one of its four free days. Finish at Water Street for dinner and whatever is playing at the Executive Surf Club.

The city, then the island
Give the first day to the city: the carrier and the aquarium on North Beach in the morning, the seawall, Heritage Park and the art museum in the afternoon, and an evening at Whataburger Field if the Hooks are home. Give the second day entirely to the islands, driving out through Mustang Island State Park and on into Padre Island National Seashore, which needs stocking up first because there is no fuel or food inside the park. If you want the Selena Museum, it has to be the Friday, because it closes at weekends.

Spring and late fall are the working season on this coast. The water is warm enough from spring, the humidity has not yet settled in, and the state park has not started turning people away at capacity. High summer is hot and busy and the indoor half of this list carries the middle of the day, which is why the science museum’s later summer Friday and Saturday hours matter. Winter is mild and quiet, and everything except the swimming still runs.

Do you have to pay to go on the beach in Corpus Christi?
It depends which beach. The bay beaches in the city, North Beach and McGee Beach, are free to walk onto. The Gulf beaches cost: Mustang Island State Park charges seven dollars a day for adults and nothing for children twelve and under, Padre Island National Seashore charges twenty five dollars for a seven day vehicle pass or ten for a single day, and the city requires a twelve dollar annual permit to park in designated Gulf beach parking areas.
Is the Texas State Aquarium fully open?
The aquarium itself and the outdoor Ocean Odyssey dolphin habitat are open on normal daily hours. The Wildlife Rescue Center building on the same campus is closed to visitors for maintenance, though the center continues to take in injured animals, so do not plan a visit around seeing that part. The splash park runs at weekends only.
When can you get into the Art Museum of South Texas for free?
Four days a month, which is unusually generous and easy to miss. Admission is free on the first Friday, the second Saturday, the third Thursday all day with an evening pop up market, and the fourth Sunday of every month. It is also always free for members, for university students from the local campus, for children twelve and under, and for individuals and families with a SNAP card.
Can you drive from Padre Island to South Padre Island?
Not directly. The Mansfield Channel cuts the island in two and there is no bridge, so getting from Padre Island National Seashore to South Padre Island means an inland detour of three to four hours. Plan them as separate trips rather than as two stops on one drive.
How long do you need in Corpus Christi?
One full day covers North Beach, meaning the carrier and the aquarium, plus the downtown bayfront. Two days lets you give a whole day to the islands, which is what the place is actually for, without cutting the city short. Anything less than a full day for Padre Island National Seashore wastes the drive.
