We have been monitoring police reports online lately, and if you spend enough time looking at them, it can really open your eyes.
Actually, the good people at Lubbock Scanner Squad on Facebook monitor the reports, and we monitor them.
Now, they don’t catch everything, but they catch a lot. And there’s a whole lot going on around Lubbock on any given day that most of us probably never hear about.
The number of calls involving shots fired can be alarming. So can the number of domestic disturbance calls. But another category that seems to pop up over and over again is hit-and-run accidents.
That got me wondering where Lubbock ranks when it comes to hit-and-runs.
The answer is: I can’t find a credible ranking.
Lubbock Had Nearly 2,900 Hit-And-Run Calls In 2025
What I can tell you is that there were 2,885 hit-and-run calls in 2025, according to the City of Lubbock Police Department’s annual report.
That’s a lot.
There are two other things worth considering when you look at that number.
First, it’s actually an improvement.
The 2,885 calls in 2025 were down about 9% from 3,157 hit-and-run calls in 2024. That’s certainly better, but hit-and-runs still remained one of the top 10 reasons people called Lubbock Police.
The second thing to consider is how many people never bother calling at all.
Just the other day, I noticed a red streak of paint and an indentation in the back door of my vehicle. Somebody apparently got me somewhere along the way and kept on going.
I suppose I could have reported it. I could have filed an insurance claim. But by the time I considered the deductible, the paperwork and the time involved, I decided the damage wasn’t worth the hassle.
So my little incident never became part of the statistics.
I’m guessing I’m not the only one.
My damage was minimal. Other people aren’t nearly as lucky. Some people come outside and discover serious damage to their vehicle, or even find themselves without a drivable car, while the person responsible is long gone.
And there’s often not much you can do about it.

I still can’t tell you whether Lubbock ranks 10th, 50th or 150th among American cities for hit-and-run accidents.
But I don’t really need a ranking to tell me this:
2,885 calls in one year is way too many.
