LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – There’s plenty to see and witness when you step inside the Thomas A. Martin Youth Sports Complex.
“Sixteen diamond fields used for baseball, softball and everything in between,” operations superintendent Cori Branscum said. “A lot of leagues, tournaments, outside groups coming in to use the facility.”
Since the beginning of August, construction crews have worked hard to transform the space. The biggest renovation to these 16 fields will be the placement of artificial turf. Fifteen will have artificial turf across the entire field, while grass will still be in the outfield for one field.
Branscum says the hope with these renovations is more tournaments and leagues will make their way to south Lubbock to compete and bring entertainment to the area.
“It’s home for a lot of people to come out on a Saturday or a weekend tournament and come enjoy the atmosphere,” Branscum said. “Being around teams, being around competitive nature. It’s a positive environment.”
More than anything else, these renovations are giving kids the best chance to succeed and have fun in this environment.
“Now we don’t have to worry about hot spots, dead spots in the grass, irrigation leaks that could postpone a game or something of that sort,” Branscum said. “Now we can control more and allow the teams to be out on the fields more efficiently.”
Crews are looking to finish construction by the beginning of March, just in time for spring ball. While there might be some hurdles to overcome along the way, Branscum hopes everyone can come out when construction finishes to experience the joys the diamond has to offer.
“These guys are doing a great job,” Branscum said. “They’re trying to hit it hard, hit it fast and get ahead of everything.” This is going to be a beautiful sight to see and it’s just going to be so enjoyable for the community, just knowing that this is here in Lubbock. You don’t have to go out of town; you don’t have to go out to the Metroplex to find this. It’s right here in our backyard.”
