Police reveal what happened before the confrontation and whether criminal charges could follow

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A confrontation at a Corpus Christi middle school is drawing attention after video of the incident spread across social media.

The video shows an angry parent at Dorothy Adkins Middle School along Ennis Joslin on Monday following a dispute involving students.

The father, Julio Zuviri, later sent a statement saying he had worked hard to keep his daughter away from the kind of environment he believes led to the confrontation.

CCISD Police Chief Kirby Warnke says what began as a verbal altercation between students quickly escalated when parents became involved.

“What we had was a verbal altercation between students, and that escalated into parents behaving poorly,” Warnke said.

Warnke says everyone involved in the confrontation has now been banned from CCISD properties.

The police chief says the investigation is still underway and criminal charges could eventually be filed depending on what investigators find.

Warnke also says there was no report made to the district concerning the alleged bullying before the confrontation.

“I know in this instance because I asked the Campos there was no bully reports made or anything like that and it didn’t stem from something like that,” Warnke said. “I think it’s probably something that occurred over the summer and just came back into the regular school year.”

The district sent a letter to parents following the incident, reminding families that concerns involving students should be handled through the appropriate channels.

American Federation of Teachers Union President Nancy Vera also criticized the way the confrontation was handled.

“The school and the child would’ve been better served if he would’ve gone in there and lodged a complaint on paper and with a little bit more civility,” Vera said.

Warnke says investigators will review video, witness statements and any threats that may have been made.

The investigation will determine whether the confrontation rose to the level of a criminal offense and whether anyone could face charges.
