SAN ANTONIO – Uber launched a livestream feature that allows parents to monitor their teen’s rides in real time, the company said in a news release.
Through the Uber driver’s front-facing camera, the release said parents can check on how their teens’ Uber rides are going via the livestream.
The rideshare company said a push notification will be sent to the parent or guardian who’s linked to the teen’s account if the driver has the livestream feature enabled.
Once the livestream is active, Uber said both the teen and the driver are notified.
According to ABC News, the livestream feature was officially introduced Aug. 25 in nine U.S. markets:
Atlanta
Cleveland
El Paso
Orlando
Phoenix
Portland
Raleigh-Durham
Rhode Island
San Antonio
“Privacy is built into the experience from start to finish,” the release said, in part. “Only the teen’s linked parent or guardian can view the live video stream during an active trip.”
When the ride ends, the driver, guardian and teen will not have access to the stream due to encryption. The company said it will review the encrypted recording if an incident is reported.
“Live video is the latest way we’re updating teen accounts to meet the needs of families and build on existing safety features like live trip tracking, PIN verification, and audio recording,” the release states.
Uber said the feature will expand nationwide over the next few weeks.
