Bucc-ee’s, the oh-so-popular mega-sized gas station/ cultural icon, has extremely competitive pay. I’ve seen what Buc-ee’s pays in some areas and daydreamed about having this seemingly low-stress job with an absolutely decent paycheck. Except…they don’t want me. Or at least, they would have me wrapped up like a mummy.

Buc-ee’s Has An Extremely Strict Dress Code

I would also call it antiquated in 2026. No visible tattoos, no body piercings (it appears single lobe piercings are okay), no unnatural colored hair. Geez, I check all three boxes and would have never guessed anyone would care about my rather dainty and pretty helix piercing.

For someone like me, this reads like, “women must wear hoop skirts and men must have their Jacobian ruffs starched,” which is to say this policy is ancient. It also feels like Buc-ee’s is hiring a “look” instead of ability or competence. To be fair, other parts of the dress code make sense, like no open-toed shoes or faded clothing.

Why Buc-ee’s Is Allowed To Exclude These Potential Employees

Of course, Buc-ee’s is a private business and can hire as they please (within legally protected limits), and the chain has fought diligently to separate itself from the competition, including suing other gas stations for using a cartoon mascot.

Since there is a stereotype about who works at gas stations, it’s clear that Buc-ee’s is pushing hard for a “wholesome” image. Buc-ee’s doesn’t allow for commercial truck parking, either. It’s like a gas station-themed park for travelers who want a guaranteed clean bathroom and Beaver nuggets.

In addition to the dress code, Buc-ee’s also drug tests and performs extensive background checks on employees (that can’t be cheap), and employee smoking on the premises is not allowed. Reddit forums about working for the brand have many former employees echoing the same sentiment: the pay is great, but it’s actually quite a stressful and demanding job, contrary to my preconceived notion that it would be pretty chill. I’ll probably still drop by for the fudge, though.
