CORPUS CHRISTI — One of Gregory-Portland’s few hiccups against Corpus Christi Carroll was a fumbled opening kickoff. But once the Wildcats regrouped, they looked like the squad many had predicted this season in the annual Battle of the Bridge at Buc Stadium.
Two plays after the miscue on the kickoff, G-P quarterback Carter Dominguez rambled 89 yards for a touchdown and the rout was on. Dominguez finished the night with 343 total yards, including 313 in the first half to help push the Wildcats to a dominating 53-6 non-district victory against the Tigers on Aug. 27.
The Wildcats (1-0) scored on five of their six first half possessions as they displayed a precision passing game that produced two touchdowns and a solid running game that produced three. Dominguez combined four of the five touchdowns, two on the ground and two in the air, as Kaden Ballard scored the other TD in the dominating first half.
“(The) start was very important,” said Dominguez, who rushed for 147 yards and completed 13 of 16 passes for 196 yards in the win. “Last year we had a great season and didn’t end how we wanted it to. Tonight we showed we bounced back.”
Gregory-Portland’s defense also stymied the Tigers (0-1), holding them to 34 yards in the first half and also taking advantage of multiple Carroll miscues to give the offense short fields. The Tigers finished the game with 211 total yards as much of that came in the second half after the game was out of reach.
Carroll crossed midfield three times in the game as G-P forced a fumble and Eli Supnet had an interception as their lone score was a 67-yard TD from Nate Bazan to Ignacio Arrellano in the third quarter.
“I think we got a really good team, you know we’ve got a lot of guys back from last year that played a whole bunch,” Gregory-Portland coach Brent Davis said. “I’ve got a lot of good senior leadership. We didn’t the start the game the way we wanted to but we settled down … it was all those first game jitters. Way too many penalties (10 for 89 yards) but we’ll get all that cleaned up.”
