The aftermath of severe storms that passed through the San Antonio region overnight has forced at least one area school district to cancel classes on Friday, August 28.
Somerset Independent School District announced via social media at around 5 a.m. that it will not hold any classes on Friday. The district cited power outages that happened as a result of the inclement weather.
“All district events and activities scheduled for this morning are canceled,” the statement reads.
Coaches and staff will issue additional information to the community regarding afternoon activities, according to the post. The district urged families and students to stay safe and monitor official Somerset ISD communication channels for further updates.
South-Central Texas is at risk for scattered showers and thunderstorms again throughout Friday. There is about a 30% chance after 4 p.m., according to the San Antonio / Austin office of the National Weather Service. Any stronger systems that form will be capable of producing strong winds and locally heavy downpours, the agency says.
