Westlake football opened its 2026-27 season with a 33-26 win over Inglewood, rallying from a fourth-quarter deficit to take down the visitors from California.
The Chaparrals faced a fierce Inglewood defense, led by four-star defensive lineman Myels Smith. But the Sentinels faded late, worn down by the ground game. Westlake running back C.J. Jones scored the go-ahead 4-yard touchdown with less than 2 minutes left in the fourth quarter to seal the game.

Westlake quarterback Patton Jones struggled to pass against stingy Inglewood in the first half, although he connected with wide receiver Nash Chapman in the first quarter for an 18-yard touchdown. Most of his damage came on the ground; Jones rushed for two touchdowns and showed a willingness to absorb contact. And late in the fourth quarter, he found wide receiver Rhett Jenkins for a 51-yard gain that set up C.J. Jones’ winning touchdown.

Inglewood is forced to punt, and Westlake gets the ball back with a chance to take the lead. A huge 51-yard pass to Rhett Jenkins sets the Chaps up on the 10-yard line. Facing a third down, C.J. Jones scores on a 4-yard run to put Westlake back on top.

The Sentinels receive the ball with less than two minutes left. A negative run puts them behind the chains, and Jahn misses a downfield pass. Inglewood turns it over on downs following another incompletion, and Westlake kneels it out.
The Westlake running game has begun to make inroads on the Inglewood defense. C.J. Jones trucks his way to the opposing 17-yard line and Patton Jones finishes the drive with his second rushing touchdown of the night.

Jahn connects with wide receiver Allen Wilson for a 41-yard gain. Westlake’s defense continues to struggle against the pass, as Jahn finds a wide-open Trent Bellamy for a 17-yard touchdown. The two-point attempt fails.
Patton Jones escapes from what looked like a drive-ending sack for a 14-yard completion to wide receiver Braden Riddell. Running back C.J. Jones rips off a 14-yard run to get Westlake into the red zone. Inglewood defensive back Jediah Cabs picks off a pass intended for Riddell in the end zone to suck the life out of the stadium.

Jahn responds with a 61-yard bomb to wide receiver Allen Wilson to retake the lead. But Westlake blocks the extra point, and defensive back Hank Fredenburg runs it back for two points.
Westlake quarterback Patton Jones uses his legs to spark the offense. He finishes off the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run, giving the Chaps back the lead.

Westlake makes a stand, forcing an Inglewood punt with 1:45 left in the half. But the Chaps fail to capitalize, going three-and-out. The Sentinels drive down the field, with Jahn ripping pass after pass. Westlake stops Inglewood at the 2-yard line as the second quarter expires.
Welch catches a pass to put Inglewood on the Westlake 1-yard line. He finishes the job, plowing into the end zone for the score.

A Jones pass attempt on third and goal falls incomplete. Westlake settles for a 25-yard field goal.
Inglewood converts from the Westlake 7-yard line. Quarterback Lincoln Jahn connects with wide receiver Brandon Crawford for a touchdown. An extra point tied the game.
